LIBRARIAN’S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AS A CORRELATE OF JOB PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC POLYTECHNIC LIBRARIES IN THE NORTH-CENTRAL, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigated the Influence of librarian’s professional development as a coorrelate of job performance in public Polytechnic libraries in the North-Central, Nigeria. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The review of related literature was done under conceptual framework which identified the influence of librarian’s professional development on attendance to conferences; attendance to workshops and attendances to in-service training in public Polytechnic libraries in the North-Central, Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 700 (Seven hundred) librarians from 13 (thirteen) public polytechnic libraries in the North-Central, Nigeria. A Sample of 300 (Three hundred) librarians from10 (Ten) choose public polytechnic libraries was used for the study. A 15-item structured questionnaire by the researchers tilted ‘’Librarians Professional Development and job Performance Questionnaire (LPDJPQ)’’ was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics of Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research questions while the Chi-Square (x) statistics tool was used to test the influence of librarian’s job performance on the attendance to conferences, attendance to workshops and attendances to in-service training in public polytechnic libraries in the North-Central, Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended amongst others that Polytechnic administrators should be encouraged to allocate a separate budget for library staff annually, this must be sufficient enough to carter for all issues of librarian’s professional development especially to attendance to conferences, seminars and symposia among others. Also, the educational administrators should regularly organize workshops for librarians in order to update their knowledge and skills to enhance job performance in the polytechnic libraries. Furthermore, the Polytechnic administrators should endeavor to make sufficient funds available for the in-service training in public polytechnic libraries. Conclusion were made and the implications of the findings drawn.
