OPEN – GRAZING IN THE MIDDLE BELT REGION NIGERIA: IMPLICATIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Stella Chioma Opara, Joseph Chibuzo Inmpey

Abstract

This paper examined the effects of open grazing to Human capital development and sustainable development in the middle belt region of Nigeria. This came about as a result of incessant clashes between farmers and pastoralists which have resulted to destruction of lives, agricultural farms, burning of houses and schools, creation of refugee camps and untold hardship to the people of the region over grazing resources. The clashes have led to the disruption of school calendar, shutting down of schools and forcing children out of school in some parts of the country. The study was guided by Frustration-Aggression theory. Documentary and content analysis were employed in the study. The study recommended amongst others, sensitization of the pastoralist to modern agricultural development to help create an enabling environment for sustainable development and for education sector in particular, so as to build the needed Human Capital for the achievement of Sustainable development goal four in Nigeria. (Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education).
