THE POWER OF STORYTELLING IN INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION: A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON BOWEN UNIVERSITY

Abstract


In today's dynamic educational landscape, the role of storytelling in institutional development has emerged as a critical and transformative force. This paper delves into the profound impact of storytelling with a specific focus on Bowen University, a prominent Nigerian institution. Through the lens of a qualitative study, we delve into the multifaceted ways in which storytelling operates as a potent catalyst for growth, engagement, and transformation within the institution. Our research approach encompasses a rich tapestry of interviews, focus group discussions, and content analysis, providing a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play. Participants in this study include current and former faculty, staff, students, alumni, and administrators of Bowen University. The findings of this study uncover a vivid tapestry of narratives, illustrating how storytelling intertwines seamlessly with Bowen University's identity. These narratives, both historical and contemporary, serve as the institution's lifeblood, illuminating its core values and vision. Through storytelling, Bowen University fosters a profound sense of belonging, unifying a diverse community of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. These narratives engage and inspire, forging strong connections and a collective commitment to the institution's continuous development. Moreover, storytelling within Bowen University not only reflects its history but also shapes its future. It serves as a powerful vehicle through which administrators communicate the institution's vision and strategic objectives, securing unwavering support and alignment from stakeholders. This study also explores the challenges and opportunities presented by storytelling in an age of digital transformation, emphasizing the need for authenticity and accuracy in narratives while also highlighting the potential of new media. In conclusion, this work underscores the undeniable influence of storytelling in institutional development, illustrating that it is not merely a mode of communication but a dynamic force for transformative growth. These insights offer valuable guidance to educational institutions worldwide, emphasizing the importance of storytelling as a means to preserve identity, build vibrant communities, and chart compelling paths forward.
